Heart rate training on Apple Watch: what’s built in.

Your watch already does more heart-rate work than most people realize. Here’s the full toolkit — every feature linked to Apple’s own documentation — and the gaps Zone2 was built to fill.

In the box
Heart rate zones

Since watchOS 9, the Workout app shows your zone mid-workout. Zones are calculated automatically from your health data (you need a birth date in Health), and zones 2–4 are editable under Settings → Workout.

Custom workouts

Build structured sessions with warmup, work/recovery intervals, and cooldown — with heart-rate alerts available, including a target heart-rate range.

High & low alerts

Outside workouts, the watch can notify you if your heart rate stays above or below a threshold you choose — a health safety net rather than a training tool.

Chest straps welcome

You can pair Bluetooth heart rate monitors like chest straps directly to the watch (pairing steps here) when you want beat-level accuracy.

Honest about its limits

Apple documents when the optical sensor struggles: some tattoos, cold-weather blood flow, and irregular movements like tennis or boxing read worse than rhythmic running or cycling.

Cardio Fitness

The watch estimates your VO2 max as “Cardio Fitness”, compares it against your age and sex, and notifies you if it drops into the low range.

What’s missing is the score.

Apple shows you heart-rate data; it doesn’t hold you to a plan. There’s no “was that workout actually in Zone 2?” verdict, no weekly minutes-in-zone goal quietly accumulating across every run, ride, and row.

That’s the layer Zone2 adds: it reads your zones and workouts straight from HealthKit, scores each session against the zone you were targeting, rolls everything into one weekly goal ring, and keeps your current zone on your wrist — with a tap when you leave it.

watchOS

Your watch taps you the moment you leave the zone.

Your current zone stays on your wrist for the whole workout. If your heart rate climbs too high, a tap brings you back — no bad news waiting at the end.

ZONE 2 · HOLD 139 22:41 in zone
ZONE 4 · EASE UP 161 above target
